The interest of states in the Arctic has been developing for years, and it is explained by the term FOMO — the syndrome of lost profits. This was announced on February 24 by Terye Aunevik, Mayor of Longyearbyen in Svalbard, in an interview with Izvestia.

FOMO is a term meaning "the fear of missing something important." It was first used by writer Patrick McGinnis in 2004. FOMO occurs when a person realizes that they have missed an opportunity to achieve something or see something interesting.

"I think attention to the Arctic has been building over the years, and in a way, I have a feeling that it's a bit like FOMO - the fear of missing out on something. That's why a lot of countries are interested in the Arctic, although it seems to me that sometimes it's more a conversation out of curiosity.: what is happening is how countries — other countries, not the Arctic ones — are trying to find here, let's say, some kind of "entry point," Aunevik said.

In addition, he added that cooperation between the Arctic countries has always existed, but states that do not have direct access to this area are showing greater interest in the Arctic.

The details of the story can be found in the information and analytical program "Izvestia. The main thing" on Channel Five.

On February 10, the Commander-in-Chief of the Norwegian Armed Forces, Eirik Kristoffersen, called for the creation of a hotline between the Norwegian and Russian military departments in order to avoid misunderstandings and escalation in the Arctic. In addition, he added that there are still some direct contacts between Moscow and Oslo.

Irina Strelnikova, Associate Professor of the Department of Foreign Regional Studies and Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Arctic Studies at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, said on February 9 that the United States is interested in cooperation with Russia in the Arctic and, in particular, mining projects.

All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MAX messenger.
