A man was sentenced for the death of his wife and three children in a fire in the Moscow region.

The Yegoryevsky City Court of the Moscow region ruled in the case of the death of a woman and three children in a fire caused by the actions of the father of the family. This is reported by the regional prosecutor's office.

The fire occurred on August 31, 2024, on the fourth floor of an apartment building in the village of Yurtsovo, where the family rented a house. It was established that the father of the family brought two batteries from cargo tricycles to the apartment and put them to charge in the corridor next to 10 household gas cylinders and solvent tanks.

At some point, one of the batteries exploded and a fire started. People were cut off from the front door, the father of the family, his wife and four children jumped from the balcony to escape.

Having fallen from the height of the fourth floor, the children and their mother received various injuries, the woman died as a result. The three youngest children could not get out of the fire at all, they stayed in the apartment and died, the online publication Podmoskovye Segodnya clarifies.

The court found the man guilty of Part 3 of Article 219 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Violation of fire safety requirements, which negligently caused serious harm to human health, as well as the death of two or more persons") and sentenced him to one year and four months in a penal colony. The verdict has not yet entered into legal force.

Earlier, the Investigative Committee reported that a number of examinations were conducted during the investigation of the tragic fire, including fire-technical, forensic, and psychological-psychiatric. It was established that the fire started as a result of the explosion of one of the batteries.
