Georgy Traeger, vascular surgeon at the Russian Railways Medicine Limb Rescue Center, listed some non-obvious facts about varicose veins. In an interview with Radio 1 on February 23, the specialist noted that modern equipment and qualified doctors make it possible to treat varicose veins without hospitalization.
According to him, in the hands of an experienced phlebologist, laser coagulation and sclerotherapy usually prove effective, whereas open surgery with incisions and sutures is considered an outdated method that does not meet modern treatment standards.
At the same time, the doctor stressed that the choice of a clinic should be approached carefully, since there are insufficiently qualified specialists on the market, after which patients have to undergo repeated treatment.
He added that there are no seasonal restrictions for procedures, although it is more difficult to wear compression knitwear in summer. Pregnant women are advised to postpone treatment until the end of breastfeeding. As a preventive measure, the specialist advised walking more — 5-7 thousand steps a day is enough — and, if possible, visiting the pool, since swimming helps to improve blood circulation.
