The Iranian authorities may conclude a deal with China on the purchase of anti-ship cruise missiles. This was reported on February 24 by the Reuters news agency, citing sources.

According to six sources familiar with the negotiations, Iran is close to concluding a deal with China on the purchase of anti-ship cruise missiles, while the United States is deploying extensive naval forces off the Iranian coast ahead of possible strikes against the Islamic Republic.

According to sources, the deal for the supply of Chinese missiles is nearing completion, but the delivery date has not yet been agreed. According to the agency, these supersonic missiles have a range of about 290 km and are designed to "bypass ship defenses by flying at low altitude and high speed."

"The deployment of these missiles will significantly enhance Iran's strike capabilities and pose a threat to U.S. naval forces in the region," Reuters wrote, citing a statement from two weapons experts.

As the agency became aware, negotiations with China on the purchase of missile systems, which began "at least two years ago," accelerated dramatically after the 12-day war between Israel and Iran in June 2025.

"If Iran gets supersonic missiles to attack ships in the area, it will completely change the situation. These missiles are very difficult to intercept," said Danny Citrinovich, a former Israeli intelligence officer.

On February 18, the Axios portal reported a high probability of a military clash between the United States and Iran. It was noted that the Israeli government is aiming at regime change in Tehran and is already preparing for military operations.

As the Financial Times noted on February 24, the United States will be able to launch intensive strikes against Iran only for 4-5 days, and its current military potential will not be enough for more. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on February 19 that Russia sees an "unprecedented escalation" around Iran and hopes for a diplomatic solution to the conflict with the United States.
