- The media learned about the EU's plans to approve a loan to Ukraine for €90 billion without Hungary's consent
The European Union (EU) will approve the allocation of a loan to Ukraine for € 90 billion, despite the blocking of this initiative by Hungary. This was reported on February 24 by RBC-Ukraine, citing an unnamed European official.
"We are working on introducing a loan. It will be adopted today and will enter into force on February 27. We are working on a financial strategy and a memorandum of understanding," the source said.
At the same time, the allocation of funds to Ukraine is scheduled for the second half of March, when "the issue with Hungary will hopefully be resolved," the official added.
The Politico newspaper reported earlier that day that Hungary's blocking of an EU loan to Ukraine caused disappointment among European officials who arrived in Kiev. In turn, Hungary continues to insist on the resumption of supplies via the Druzhba pipeline as a condition for lifting the blockage.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced on February 23 that the country had blocked the 20th package of sanctions against Russia and the allocation of a loan to Ukraine worth €90 billion due to Kiev's shutdown of the Druzhba oil pipeline. He also noted that Hungary regards Kiev's suspension of the transit of Russian oil through Druzhba as an encroachment on its sovereignty.
Prior to that, Szijjarto also stated that the European Commission was acting in the interests of Ukraine, not the EU member states. The minister stressed that Kiev had begun "explicit political blackmail of Hungary" by blocking oil supplies through the pipeline.
