- Former British Ambassador Mandelson was released after being arrested for having an affair with Epstein
Former British Ambassador to the United States Peter Mandelson has been released from custody after being arrested in London on suspicion of abuse of office in connection with revelations of his ties to American financier Jeffrey Epstein, accused of sexual crimes. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on February 23.
"Mandelson has been released from custody," the article says.
They also recalled that the 72-year-old former diplomatic employee was dismissed from his post.
The arrest of Mandelson became known a day earlier. It was noted that the former ambassador, who denies any wrongdoing, was taken to the police station for questioning.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer dismissed Mandelson from his post as the kingdom's ambassador to the United States on September 11 last year because of his ties to Epstein. The emails show that the depth and extent of his relationship with the financier are significantly different from those known at the time of his appointment.
The Telegraph newspaper reported on February 3 that Mandelson may be deprived of a pension paid by the European Union (EU) because of his mention in the documents on the Epstein case. It was noted that in 2009, the man sent a confidential British document to the financier.
