On February 23, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky expressed dissatisfaction with critical statements addressed to him by the former commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) and the country's current ambassador to the UK, Valery Zaluzhny.

"I guess we all had the same emotion — wasn't it too early for all this. I just think it's very ugly to discuss the details that Valery Fedorovich mentioned today. Because no one will benefit from this," Zelensky said in an interview with the AFP news agency posted on YouTube.

Zelensky also clarified that he has not communicated with Zaluzhny since his appointment as Ukraine's ambassador to London. When asked by journalists whether Zaluzhny would be able to become a good president of Ukraine in the future, the Ukrainian leader replied that he "does not know."

On February 18, Zaluzhny spoke about threats against the country's leadership after a search of his office in Kiev in 2022. He noted that the actions of the security forces looked like a threat, since they did not disclose which materials they intended to seize.

Russian Deputy Security Council Chairman Dmitry Medvedev, in turn, said that he had commented on Zaluzhny's recent statements about the reasons for the failures of the 2023 Ukrainian counteroffensive and pointed to his opposition to Zelensky. Medvedev recalled that earlier Zaluzhny had accused Zelensky of the failure of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' counteroffensive in 2023.
