Alexander Beglov, the Governor of St. Petersburg, paid tribute to the memory of firefighters who died during the extinguishing of the Leningrad Hotel. This was announced on February 23 in his press service.

"Beglov honored the memory of firefighters who died in the line of duty today. A solemn funeral ceremony was held at the Serafimovsky Cemetery on the 35th anniversary of the deaths of nine Leningrad firefighters while extinguishing a fire at the Leningrad Hotel," the press service wrote on its Telegram channel.

It is specified that a minute of silence was also declared and a liturgy was served. According to Beglov, February 23, 1991 was a tragic day for the city.

"On this day, we remember all the firefighters and rescuers who died at the combat post," the governor emphasized.

The tragedy occurred on February 23, 1991. Nine Leningrad firefighters and a police officer saved people from a burning hotel at the cost of their lives. The fire occurred in one of the rooms on the seventh floor and quickly spread through the corridors, adds "Газета.Ru ".

On January 26, Beglov conveyed to Russian President Vladimir Putin the gratitude of veterans for their support of initiatives to preserve the memory of the siege of Leningrad. The mayor also noted that 44.9 thousand veterans live in St. Petersburg, including participants and invalids of the Great Patriotic War, residents of besieged Leningrad, home front workers and former minor prisoners of fascism.
