Security analyst and political scientist David Saucedo, in an interview with Izvestia on February 23, named three possible scenarios after the liquidation of the leader of the Jalisco New Generation drug cartel (CJNG) Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known by the nickname El Mencho, in Mexico.

"First, the Jalisco cartel manages to appoint a new leader, and he continues his criminal activities," Saucedo said.

According to the analyst, the second option could be a split within the cartel if the leaders fail to choose a successor to El Mencho. He expressed the opinion that the American government is also seeking such a result. The third option, as Saucedo noted, is the breakup of the CJNG into several groups. The analyst added that the elimination of the drug lord during this period may be related to the pressure of the American leader Donald Trump on the Mexican authorities.

"When the governments of Mexico and the United States began to put harsh pressure on the Sinaloa cartel, the Jalisco cartel became the main beneficiary of this struggle. CJNG has expanded its territories, influence, economic power and routes, increased drug production and supply," he stressed.

The AP news agency reported on the same day that at least 14 people had died as a result of large-scale riots in Mexico. It was noted that seven members of the National Guard of the country were among the dead. In addition, the authorities of several states have canceled classes in schools, and foreign governments have urged citizens in Mexico to stay at home.

On February 22, US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau called the elimination of Cervantes, known as El Mencho, a great achievement for the whole world. He also congratulated the Mexican law enforcement forces.

El Mencho was eliminated on February 22 in the municipality of Talpa de Allende in the state of Jalisco. It was clarified that the liquidation was carried out by units of the Mexican Armed Forces. White House press Secretary Caroline Leavitt announced on February 23 that American intelligence had assisted in the liquidation of the head of the drug cartel.

It was noted that at least 240 Russian tourists are in the Mexican city of Puerto Vallarta. An eyewitness described the situation as scary and critical.
