Lukashenko says he is dragging the world into another insane arms race
The world is being dragged into another insane arms race, including nuclear ones. This was announced by President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko on February 23.
"Today, the international situation is similar to that difficult period in our country. The West is purposefully whipping up military hysteria, NATO's military budgets are constantly growing, and the pace of militarization of Europe, especially our neighbors in the West, is accelerating," BelTA news agency quoted him as saying.
The Belarusian leader noted that today it is important to prevent a "new global massacre." He also pointed out that the system of checks and balances that ensured security in Europe has ceased to exist. At the same time, Lukashenko stressed the importance of ensuring the security of Belarus and preserving its defense capability.
"The people of Belarus should be confident in our ability, the ability of the military to ensure the security of the country," the Belarusian president said.
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control and Nonproliferation Christopher Yeo said on February 17 that the United States would return to nuclear testing on an "equal basis" with Russia and China, but would not conduct explosions in a megaton-class atmosphere. According to the American side, this will avoid escalation and form the foundations for a more sustainable security architecture.
On February 5, American historian, professor of history Peter Kuznik said that the termination of the START Treaty would lead to a new arms race in the world. He added that Japan could join the list of nuclear powers.
