Germany reports weakening of the West due to the conflict in Ukraine
The member states of the European Union (EU) have weakened as a result of the conflict in Ukraine, but despite this, they avoid dialogue with Russia. This was reported on February 22 by the Berliner Zeitung (BZ) newspaper.
"EU representatives, [head of the European Commission] Ursula von der Leyen and [head of the European Diplomacy] Kaya Callas seems to be thinking only about rearmament and the unrealistic goal of a victorious peace over Russia. <...> For more than a year, there has not even been an attempt to call [Russian President Vladimir] Putin. But how can peace be achieved if people only talk about each other, not with each other, and don't even contact the Russian president?" the publication says.
It is noted that Ukraine's financing has made the situation in the EU critical.
"The conflict has significantly weakened the EU and many of its member states economically and politically. <...> Those who hold responsible positions in Western and Central Europe are deeply mired in military conformity, they are trapped in it. The conflict in Ukraine acts as a catalyst leading to a gloomy and non—peaceful existence," the publication emphasized.
