- The head of the Ministry of Information of Belarus urged not to allow a split on the basis of language
The Minister of Information of Belarus, Marat Markov, declared the inadmissibility of speculation in society based on language and stressed the need to preserve the unity of the country. He said this on February 22 in an interview with the STV TV channel.
"You can see for yourself that it is around language problems that spears are being broken. And there are two absolutely diametrically opposed groups. Some are saying that the Belarusian language is being infringed in the country, while others are shouting that the Russian language is being infringed. Both of them are not working for the benefit of the state," Markov said.
The head of the department stressed that it is unacceptable to allow a split based on language.
"We have two official languages (Belarusian and Russian — Ed.), and in no case should we infringe on one of them in favor of the other, and vice versa. Just as it is impossible to infringe on any language, any of the 150 nationalities that live in the republic. This is the main principle — do no harm," the minister explained.
According to Markov, slightly more than 1% of viewers prefer to watch television content in Belarusian.
On September 17, 2025, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko warned against the introduction of language restrictions in the country, as this could have negative consequences. He noted the need for a careful approach to the use of any language and stressed that any measures should not infringe on the Russian language. Lukashenko also drew attention to the conflict in Ukraine related to language restrictions and recommended that young people continue to learn English.
