Possible US strikes on Iran may not lead to the "overthrow of the regime" of Iran's supreme leader Ali Khamenei. This was stated on February 22 by former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in an interview with Izvestia.

"I am not sure that a military attack by the United States can really lead to the fall of the Iranian government. And therefore, if an agreement is signed, I think it will be enough," Olmert said.

He also stressed that he sees no reason why Israel should participate in the American military operation, unless "Israel itself is attacked."

"We have to be ready, we have to be on our guard, but I would prefer America to strike Iran. If the United States comes to the conclusion that it can achieve in a military operation against Iran what it believes it can achieve, namely the overthrow of the Iranian government," the former Israeli minister concluded.

Earlier in the day, Bild announced a possible US military strike on Iran on February 23 or 24. It was reported that, according to Kiriakou, the American government had already made a fundamental decision about the attack.

The Axios portal also reported on the high probability of a military clash between the United States and Iran. It was noted that the Israeli government is aiming at regime change in Tehran and is already preparing for military operations.

On February 17, the supreme leader of Iran urged not to pre-empt the outcome of negotiations with the United States on issues related to the Iranian nuclear program, noting that this was unwise. He noted that such initiatives are actually aimed at forcing Iran to renounce its terms.
