Hungary warned about blocking the 20th package of sanctions due to Kiev's decisions
Hungary will block the 20th package of anti-Russian sanctions due to Kiev's refusal to resume oil transit through the Druzhba pipeline. This was announced on February 22 by Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto.
"We also made it clear that until the Ukrainians resume oil supplies to Hungary, we will block important decisions for Ukraine within the EU. It was planned to adopt the 20th package of sanctions at tomorrow's meeting of the foreign ministers. We will block this decision," Szijjarto said after a meeting of the Energy Security Council.
He also stressed that Hungary is not going to support "any important decisions" for Ukraine until oil supplies resume.
"Until now, it was expected that the 20th package of sanctions would be adopted at this meeting. But this will not happen," the Hungarian minister concluded.
The day before, Szijjarto reported that Hungary was also blocking the allocation of a loan from the European Union (EU) to Ukraine in the amount of €90 billion for the same reason. He stressed that Budapest would not allow the inclusion of the Rosatom state corporation and the entire Russian nuclear industry in the new EU sanctions package.
On February 4, the EU press service announced the refusal of Prague, Budapest and Bratislava to participate in the €90 billion financing scheme for Ukraine. It was noted that according to the idea of the alliance, this amount should be provided to Kiev for the period from 2026 to 2027.
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said in December 2025 that the leadership of the European Union, which decided to send €90 billion to support Kiev, instead of investing in the development of Ukraine, was solely interested in continuing the conflict.
