Rosstandart has updated the GOST for instant coffee, the new requirements will come into force in November this year. This became known on February 22 from materials published on the website of the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology.

The previously valid standard from January 1994 applied only to powdered coffee. The new GOST also covers granulated and freeze-dried coffee. At the same time, the presence of loosely packed lumps is allowed, which easily crumble, and granulated coffee can dissolve in 2.5 minutes with single baked parts.

The standard retains the brewing time requirements: instant coffee should dissolve in 30 seconds in hot water and in 3 minutes in cold water. In addition, the list of permitted ingredients has been expanded to include plant—based products and various food components.

The new GOST is advisory in nature and serves as a guideline for manufacturers, although it may be mandatory with a direct reference in the law, contract or technical regulations.

Experts warned about the risks of drinking coffee in the cold. On February 19, general practitioner Shota Kalandia reported that caffeine increases the load on the cardiovascular system, especially at low temperatures, and can cause increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, and increased myocardial oxygen demand.
