Remote scammers have started using a new scheme to deceive sellers on the Internet, offering them to use a QR code to allegedly receive payment for goods. As a result, instead of receiving funds, money is debited from the bank account. This became known on February 22.

According to the materials of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, which were reviewed by TASS, the attackers find ads for the sale of goods and contact the owners, declaring their willingness to pay for the purchase. Then they send a QR code with a link to a fake page where they are asked to enter their bank card details.

The ministry urged citizens to be careful when selling online.

Irina Volk, the official representative of the Russian Interior Ministry, reported on February 19 that fraudsters had become more active on the eve of the holidays, posing as employees of delivery services and large stores. They reported allegedly urgent delivery or problems with the order in order to get SMS codes and access to citizens' accounts, as well as distributed phishing links and fake online stores. The Interior Ministry called for checking information only through official sources and not passing personal data on to outsiders.
