The forecaster suggested a connection between the snowy winter in Russia and global warming.

The winter of 2026, which broke records in terms of snow levels, may be the result of global warming. This was announced on February 22 by Nikolay Tereshonok, Head of the Meteorology and Climate Department of the Central Directorate for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring.

"The main reason for the snowy winter is global warming, in which an increase in the evaporation of oceans and seas leads to their precipitation on the continents, obeying the general circulation of the atmosphere," he said in an interview with TASS.

According to the forecaster, global warming does not mean a constant continuous increase in temperature. It can manifest itself, among other things, by extreme cold, as it causes high-intensity fluctuations.

"Warm periods are followed by cold ones with a positive trend. In the last two decades, the intensity of global temperature growth has increased significantly," Tereshonok explained.
