A new stage of mass student protests has begun in Iran, timed to coincide with the fortieth memorial day of those killed during the January protests. This was announced on February 21 by the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) on its website.

"The actions were a continuation of forty days of mourning for those who died during the January protests," the publication says.

According to NCRI, commemorative events in a number of cities, including Mashhad, Isfahan and Shiraz, were accompanied by anti-government slogans, and universities once again became centers of protest activity.

According to Zamaneh, the demonstrations began at the Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, where students clashed with security forces, and a similar rally was held at Amir Kabir University.

The Fars news agency reported on January 1 that unrest and mass demonstrations in Iran began on December 28, 2025, amid citizens' discontent with the escalating economic crisis.

On the same day, three people were killed and 17 others injured in protests that escalated into clashes with police in the city of Azna in Lorestan province in western Iran.

On January 6, it became known that 36 people were killed in Iran and more than 2,000 people were arrested as a result of mass protests in 92 cities of the country.
