- Lavrov: Russia is conducting a full investigation into the state of emergency with Chinese tourists on Lake Baikal
The Russian authorities are conducting a full-scale investigation into the tragic deaths of Chinese tourists on Lake Baikal on February 20, and Beijing will be informed immediately about the results. This was announced on February 21 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
"The minister expressed his sincere sympathy to the relatives of the victims and hoped that this unfortunate incident would not have a negative impact on the positive dynamics of bilateral tourist exchanges," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its website.
The Russian minister stressed that the competent authorities are already conducting a full-scale investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
On February 20, a car with tourists in the cabin went under the ice of Lake Baikal. Later, the bodies of the dead and the failed UAZ were found. At the same time, it became known about the identification of all those who were in the car at the time of its collapse.
Subsequently, the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR) reported that this group of tourists did not arrange an excursion through tour operators. In addition, the route they were following was not, according to preliminary data, coordinated with representatives of travel agencies and rescuers.
As a result, upon the incident, the chairman of the Investigative Committee (IC) of the Russian Federation, Alexander Bastrykin, demanded from the acting head of the Investigative Department (SU) of the IC of Russia for the Irkutsk region, Rinat Yamaliev, a report on the progress of the investigation into the death of tourists from China in the waters of Lake Baikal.
Denis, the administrator of the Baikal Star recreation center, told Izvestia that the only surviving Chinese tourist is still in a state of shock.
