Orban compared Callas' strategy to the plans of Napoleon and Hitler.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, during a meeting with activists of the ruling FIDESZ – Hungarian Civil Union party on February 21, said that the leaders of the European Union (EU) still hope for Ukraine's victory in the conflict, but their policy is doomed to failure and will result in damage to the union itself.
According to him, attempts by the European Union and Kiev to put pressure on Hungary will not change its desire for a peaceful solution. Orban said that the current plans of EU High Representative Kai Kallas to "defeat Russia" resemble the failed ambitions of Napoleon and Hitler.
"Napoleon and Hitler have already tried to do this, and now, if I understand correctly, Kaya Callas wants to do it," Orban said during his speech, broadcast by M1 TV channel.
The politician is convinced that a military victory over a nuclear power is impossible, and the continuation of sanctions is causing the main damage not to Moscow, but to European countries.
"If Western Europeans had supported this, the war would have ended. However, they believe that the war must continue," the Prime Minister complained.
According to Orban, the European elites, in particular the governments of Germany and France, have become hostages of their own policies: recognizing the fallacy of the course of continuing the conflict may cost them their political survival. The only way out, according to the Hungarian Prime Minister, may be early peace talks with the active participation of the United States.
Earlier in the day, Orban announced the possible termination of Hungary's electricity supplies to Ukraine. He recalled that in response to the hostile steps of the Ukrainian authorities, Budapest had already stopped supplying diesel to Kiev and frozen the provision of a "military loan" by the European Union (EU) totaling €90 billion over two years.
