Lavrov sent condolences to Wang Yi after the death of Chinese tourists on Lake Baikal

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has sent condolences to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in connection with the tragic incident on Lake Baikal. This was stated on February 20 in a message on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Lavrov expressed his sympathy to the relatives of the victims and hoped that the incident would not have a negative impact on the positive dynamics of bilateral tourist exchanges.

The Russian minister stressed that the competent authorities are already conducting a full-scale investigation into the circumstances of the incident, the results of which Beijing will be informed immediately.

On February 20, a car with tourists in the cabin went under the ice of Lake Baikal. Later, the bodies of the dead and the failed UAZ were found. At the same time, it became known about the identification of all those who were in the car at the time of its collapse.

Subsequently, the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR) reported that this group of tourists did not arrange an excursion through tour operators. In addition, the route they were following was not, according to preliminary data, coordinated with representatives of travel agencies and rescuers.

As a result, Alexander Bastrykin, Chairman of the Investigative Committee (IC) of the Russian Federation, demanded from Rinat Yamaliev, Acting head of the Investigative Department (SU) of the IC of Russia for the Irkutsk region, a report on the progress of the investigation into the death of tourists from China in the waters of Lake Baikal.

Denis, the administrator of the Baikal Star recreation center, told Izvestia that the only surviving Chinese tourist is still in a state of shock.
