Seoul's possible involvement in pumping weapons into the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) is delaying the prospects for a settlement of the Ukrainian conflict. This was announced on February 21 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
"The possible participation of the Republic of Korea in such supplies (of weapons and equipment to Ukraine. - Ed.) in any form, directly or indirectly, only postpones the prospects for a settlement of the conflict," the official website of the department quotes her as saying.
The diplomat noted that Russia will be forced to take measures, including asymmetric ones, in response to Seoul's possible participation in the PURL initiative (English — Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List, a list of Ukraine's priority requirements). In addition, such a decision by the Korean authorities will cause irreparable damage to relations between the two countries.
"Such steps, if they are taken, are at odds with Seoul's official line of non—participation in the efforts of the "collective West" to pump weapons and ammunition into the Armed Forces of Ukraine," she stressed.
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung said on December 3 last year that Seoul considers relations with Moscow important and will continue to communicate with it, despite the difficult situation in bilateral relations. In addition, the South Korean leader expressed hope for an early settlement of the conflict in Ukraine.
On February 10, the Japanese state-owned public central broadcasting company NHK reported that Japan had announced joining the NATO assistance program aimed at purchasing weapons and equipment from the United States with subsequent supplies to Ukraine.
