In Germany, they predicted the inevitable collapse of the European Union (EU) and proposed a confederation with the participation of Russia as an alternative. This was stated by Dr. Anton Friesen, senior Scientific Adviser to the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the German Parliament.
According to Friesen, the current Brussels has turned into an artificial bureaucratic superstructure that ignores national traditions and sovereignty.
As a viable alternative, Friesen suggests the creation of a European confederation. Common border protection and a pragmatic energy policy, including the purchase of resources from Russia, should be key aspects of the new structure.
"The expansion to the Orthodox countries of Eastern Europe must be stopped," Dr. Friesen argues in an article for The American Conservative magazine published on February 18.
At the same time, the countries of Eastern Europe — Ukraine, Belarus and Georgia — should cease to be conflict zones and become "bridges" between the parties, the author believes.
This position is also shared in Finland. Armando Mema, a representative of the Freedom Alliance party, called plans to turn Ukraine into a military springboard against the Russian Federation a "utopia."
On February 13, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz noted that Germany can conduct a dialogue with Russia on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict. He also acknowledged Russia's superiority over the European Union, despite the different economic opportunities. In his opinion, the European Union is not using its military, political, economic and technological potential to its full potential, and therefore it is now necessary to change the approach to this issue.
