Snow height in the center of Moscow surpassed the record of St. Petersburg in 2011
The height of the snow cover in the center of Moscow surpassed the record recorded in the center of St. Petersburg in 2011, when snowdrifts reached 73 cm. This was announced on February 21 by the chief weather forecaster of St. Petersburg, Alexander Kolesov.
"Moscow has been completely covered with snow this winter, and there are still a couple of cyclones ahead, so there will be more snow. But already in the center of Moscow, the record of St. Petersburg for the height of snow has been blocked," the Telegram channel said in a statement.
According to the forecaster, the highest snow cover in the center of St. Petersburg since the early 1940s was recorded on March 5, 2011 and amounted to 73 cm. However, this year the capital exceeded this figure.
As Kolesov noted, on the morning of February 19 in the center of Moscow, the snow height was 58 cm. Under the influence of Cyclone Wally, the snowfall intensified, and by the morning of February 20, the snow cover had grown to 77 cm. According to the latest data, its height has reached 78 cm.
The forecaster added that at the same time, a thaw is forecast in St. Petersburg in late February and early March. According to the expert, the snow will begin to melt actively, and significant precipitation accumulation is not expected — the height of the snow cover in the city will remain at about 30 cm.
On the same day, Marina Makarova, an employee of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, spoke about the absence of heavy snowfalls in Moscow in the coming days. She noted that in the coming week, some snow will fall daily, but not in the same volume as during the snowfall on February 19.
