Dermatovenerologist dispelled myths about botox injections in armpits
Injections of botulinum toxin into the armpits do not disrupt thermoregulation and do not have a toxic effect on internal organs when used correctly. On February 20, a dermatovenerologist, a trichologist, told Izvestia about this. Academician of B.V. Petrovsky" Irina Afonina.
According to the expert, injections of botulinum toxin type A into the armpit area are now considered an effective method of treating excessive sweating in cases where antiperspirants do not work.
As the doctor emphasized, the procedure is minimally invasive and is applied locally, however, it has a number of contraindications. Absolute conditions include pregnancy and lactation, acute infections and inflammation in the injection area, individual intolerance to the drug, as well as diseases with impaired neuromuscular conduction. The method is used with caution in patients taking anticoagulants, with oncological diseases and a tendency to keloid scars.
The specialist emphasized that the procedure does not disrupt the general thermoregulation of the body. The drug acts pointwise and blocks the transmission of nerve impulses only in the injection area. The rest of the sweat glands continue to function, and if necessary, the body compensates for cooling at the expense of other parts of the body.
"The body is a smart system. If we "turn off" one zone, the rest of the body takes over the thermoregulation function. In hot weather or during physical exertion, you will sweat more in other places (back, chest, palms), but not under the arms. This is compensatory sweating," she said.
With proper administration technique, the drug remains in the skin and does not affect the muscles. Temporary weakness is possible only if the injection is too deep and resolves on its own. Possible side effects include short—term hematomas, moderate soreness and, in rare cases, allergic reactions.
Separately, the expert noted that injections do not have a negative effect on the liver and kidneys. Botulinum toxin is used in microdoses, acts locally and does not create a systemic toxic load. Blocking sweating in one area does not lead to fluid accumulation in the body and does not disrupt the functioning of the excretory system.
"98-99% of sweat consists of water. Its blocking does not create an additional load on the kidneys, since the volume of fluid does not accumulate in the body, but simply redistributes, you go to the toilet more often. The drug (botox) is administered in microdoses, is metabolized on site and is excreted without passing through the liver as a toxic load," she said.
Dermatologist, cosmetologist, co-owner of the Dr. Omarov clinic network, Zarema Omarova, said on January 22 that it is necessary to continue using sunscreen (SPF) in winter. The skin needs protection from UV radiation throughout the year. In winter, the activity of UVB rays decreases, but UVA radiation acts all year round without changing its intensity.
