Poland's decision to withdraw from the Ottawa Convention reflects the general trend of reviewing international arms control agreements. On February 20, political analyst Alexander Asafov told Izvestia.

Poland has withdrawn from the Ottawa Convention on the Prohibition of anti-personnel mines. On the same day, the deputy head of the Polish Ministry of Defense, Cesary Tomczyk, said that the republic's authorities plan to start production of these munitions.

"This is a trend of prioritizing the military-industrial complex over humanism, with the destruction of major arms control agreements. We see that other general agreements are gradually falling apart," the expert noted.

According to him, withdrawal from the convention is not an exceptional event, since a number of countries have already left the document. Asafov stressed that such steps fit into a broader process of reviewing the commitments reached earlier on the basis of humanitarian principles.

The political scientist added that the Baltic states had also previously stated the possibility of similar solutions. In this context, he called Warsaw's actions "ordinary" and expected.

"This is a demonstration of the trend when the development of the military—industrial complex and the production of weapons are given priority, and previous agreements are being reviewed or canceled," Asafov concluded.

Tomczyk announced on January 16 that Poland intends to prepare for mining its eastern border as part of the Eastern Shield program. At the same time, he recalled that on February 20, the country was withdrawing from the Ottawa Convention, after which it would also be able to possess anti-personnel mines with the ability to produce them.
