Knocks in the suspension are increasingly being recorded even in modern crossovers with low mileage due to the design and operation features in Russian conditions. Nikita Rodionov, technical director of the international franchise network of FIT SERVICE car services, told Izvestia on February 24.

According to him, suspension repairs consistently remain among the most sought-after jobs in car service stations. At the same time, owners of not only high-mileage cars, but also modern crossovers are increasingly complaining about knocks and extraneous noises. The reasons for such appeals lie both in the design features of new cars and in real road conditions.

"Modern cars have become quieter and tougher at the same time, so even small backlashes and microcracks, which were previously drowned out by the general noise, are now clearly audible in the cabin," Rodionov said.

He explained that automakers are actively reducing the weight of cars by using aluminum levers, lightweight silent blocks, compact ball bearings and stabilizer bars. Such elements are worse able to withstand shocks and overloads. For crossovers with a high center of gravity, the lateral load on the chassis increases during sudden maneuvers, which accelerates the wear of stabilizer bushings, shock absorber supports and hinges.

"Our Russian climate is also affected. Modern crossovers are more often equipped with stiffer shock absorbers and progressive springs to compensate for the high body and maintain stability. In Russian conditions, during the long and cold winter, the viscosity of the working fluids in the racks increases, the grease in the supports and hinges thickens, and the suspension runs almost dry for the first kilometers. Because of this, microbursts often appear, and there is a risk of accelerated wear of parts," he noted.

Rodionov also pointed out the problem of installing substandard or unsuitable components. Improper selection of spare parts, including for Chinese models, as well as savings on maintenance can lead to knocks, vibrations and repeated breakdowns. According to him, excessively soft or rigid silent blocks, cheap stabilizer bars and shock absorbers that are not designed for a specific vehicle weight become a source of malfunctions.

Expensive versions of crossovers use adaptive shock absorbers and complex multi-link circuits that are closely related to electronics, the specialist emphasized. Sensor wear, incorrect valve operation, or calibration failures may cause the suspension to operate outside the design stiffness range. As a result, there are thuds, although the mechanical elements remain functional.

The expert added that the life of the chassis largely depends on the driving style and regular diagnostics. Smooth start of movement after parking, avoiding sudden maneuvers on the spot and timely replacement of fluids and rubber-metal elements can reduce the risk of premature wear.

On February 19, Sidorin Lab, an agency specializing in online reputation management, said that Toyota had been the automaker with the best reputation for the second year in a row. She was recognized as the winner of the second annual Reputation Leaders Award in the Automakers category. It was clarified that a total of 30 car brands were evaluated in the rating. The selection of participants was based on car sales data for 2025 provided by the analytical agency Autostat.
