The gastroenterologist spoke about the diagnosis of gastritis
Most outdated or non-existent diagnoses are based on doctors using information that was relevant 10-15 years ago. Olga Kitenko, a gastroenterologist at the Perm clinic "Pro Family", told about this on Thursday, February 19.
According to the specialist, the most common example of a non-existent diagnosis in gastroenterology is "exacerbation of chronic gastritis." Most patients have encountered this diagnosis, but from the point of view of modern medicine it is absolutely incorrect, she noted.
"Gastritis itself exists as a diagnosis, but it cannot worsen," the specialist explained in an interview with Health Mail.
Gastritis is a morphological diagnosis: it is made solely on the basis of a histological examination of a biopsy (tissue sample. — Ed.) of the gastric mucosa. No redness, swelling, or discoloration of the mucous membrane visible during gastroscopy is evidence of gastritis — the diagnosis is made only by a pathologist who examines cellular changes under a microscope, Kitenko noted.
She added that gastritis does not have exacerbations because inflammation in the surface layers of the mucous membrane, which is defined as gastritis, is physically unable to cause pain.
"Thus, the "exacerbation of gastritis" as a cause of pain is nonsense from the point of view of anatomy and physiology," said the gastroenterologist.
On February 9, Basir Bammatov, an oncologist at the Krasnogorsk Hospital of the Ministry of Health of the Moscow Region, reported that infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori remains the main risk factor for stomach cancer. The infection causes a precancerous condition called atrophic gastritis.
In turn, Andrei Nefedov, an oncologist of the highest qualification category, a thoracic surgeon, a leading researcher, and head of the Department of thoracic Oncology at the St. Petersburg State Medical University, told RT that the abuse of a number of foods can increase the risk of developing cancer, primarily of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), since they are the ones that take on a blow to yourself. He noted that processed meat (sausages, ham, bacon, corned beef) is a proven carcinogen.
Earlier, Elena Pekhotina, a gastroenterologist at the Krasnogorsk Hospital of the Ministry of Health of the Moscow Region, told the Moscow City News agency that cucumbers contain useful vitamins and minerals, and an adult can eat up to two fresh pieces of these vegetables per day.
