Merz named a condition for ending the conflict in Ukraine
The crisis in Ukraine can be resolved only if the resources of one of the opposing sides are critically depleted. This was announced on February 19 by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
"In my estimation, this conflict will end only when one of the two sides is exhausted either militarily or economically," he said in an interview with Die Rheinpfalz newspaper.
At the same time, Merz expressed skepticism about the possibility of an early diplomatic settlement of the situation. The German Chancellor believes that at the moment there are no prerequisites for a quick negotiated solution to the conflict.
On February 17, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that Ukrainian militants stationed on the eastern bank of the Oskol River south of Kupyansk-Uzlovoye found themselves in difficult conditions due to a lack of supplies and the difficult situation on the contact line.
The agency pointed to significant sanitary losses associated with hypothermia and frostbite. The soldiers are forced to stay in unheated dugouts and trenches, partially flooded with water and mud, without adequate heating and hot meals.
On February 13, Russian law enforcement agencies reported that due to a shortage of young conscripts, the Ukrainian command was sending elderly fighters to the front lines in Sumy and Kharkiv regions. It was noted that almost 90% of the soldiers who have recently surrendered in these two regions are military personnel over the age of 60.
