As part of Rosneft's environmental program, aimed, among other things, at studying and protecting marine animals, scientists studied almost 400 gray whales in the Sea of Okhotsk. This was reported in the press service of the oil company on the occasion of the World Day for the Protection of Marine Mammals.

It is also noted that experts have recorded an annual increase in the Okhotsk population of gray whales, which is one of the smallest and most vulnerable, at about 5%.

Rosneft has been a participant in the monitoring program of the Okhotsk gray whale population since 1997, during which its numbers are recorded annually, the food supply is studied, photo identification studies and acoustic monitoring are carried out.

In addition, with the support of the company, environmental monitoring of the Okhotsk-Korean gray whale population is being conducted on the northeastern shelf of Sakhalin Island. As part of its study, in particular, underwater noise levels are recorded and analyzed. Research allows us to study the nature of sounds and simulate their propagation.

In 2020, Rosneft, together with the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, implemented a large-scale project to study dolphins in the Black Sea. Based on the results of three years of observations, up-to-date data on the number and habitats of dolphins were obtained, as well as recommendations on population conservation were prepared.
