Russia is among the top countries with the highest car prices
New cars in Russia turned out to be more expensive than in Germany, South Korea, Japan and other countries. On February 19, Sergey Tselikov, director of the Autostat analytical agency, shared such statistics in his Telegram channel. He compiled a rating of countries in terms of average prices for new cars. He pointed out that cars in Russia are becoming one of the most expensive in the world.
Canada ranks first in this ranking with an average new car price of 62 thousand USD. Next are the United Kingdom (61 thousand USD), the United States (52 thousand USD) and Israel (50 thousand USD), while Russia is in fifth place (45 thousand USD).
Germany (40 thousand USD), Australia (35 thousand USD), South Korea (30 thousand USD) and China (22.5 thousand USD) followed. At the end of the rating were Japan (22.4 thousand USD) and India (11 thousand USD).
The expert noted that since 2022, prices for new cars in Russia have increased by 46%— from 2.4 million to 3.5 million rubles. The relatively high prices in the country are explained by the tariff policy: although the structure is shifted towards relatively affordable domestic and Chinese models, however, the price increases by an average of two times during import or large-scale assembly.
"The high prices in the USA and Canada are explained by the large proportion of large SUVs and pickups (more than half). In the UK, the share of the premium segment and the high exchange rate of the pound sterling are higher. Israel has very high import tariffs. Low prices in China are determined by intense competition and price wars. The share of compact cars is very high in Japan and India," the expert said.
Earlier, on February 16, it was reported that in the first half of February, prices for new cars changed for three brands officially represented on the Russian market. In all cases, an increase in prices was recorded.
Prior to that, Alexey Podshchekoldin, head of the Russian Automobile Dealers Association (ROAD), said that the average cost of a new passenger car in Russia could increase by about 10% during 2026.
