The European Commission (EC) has confirmed the cessation of diesel fuel supplies to Ukraine from Hungary and Slovakia. The corresponding statement was made on February 19 by EC representative Anna-Kaisa Itkonen.

"This is a situation that we are closely monitoring. We are in contact with all interested parties and are familiar with the decision to stop supplying diesel fuel to Ukraine," Itkonen said at a briefing posted on the EC website.

She added that the introduction of such export restrictions is possible only under very "harsh circumstances." Itkonen also stated that the EC prioritizes stable supply reliability and noted that the security of supplies to Hungary and Slovakia was not in danger.

On the eve of the Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that Hungary had stopped the supply of diesel fuel to Ukraine until the oil supply through the Druzhba pipeline was resumed.

Szijjarto announced on February 13 that Ukraine had blocked oil supplies from Russia via the Druzhba pipeline to Hungary in order to complicate the situation of the Hungarian government before the parliamentary elections. At the same time, the pipeline, according to him, is technically fully operational and ready for the resumption of supplies.

Later, on February 18, Szijjarto announced that the Hungarian oil and gas company MOL had signed the first contracts for the supply of Russian oil by sea through Croatia. He specified that the raw materials will be delivered to the Croatian port in early March.
