The European Commission (EC) is acting in the interests of Ukraine, not the member states of the European Union (EU). This was announced on February 19 by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

"The European Commission is not the European Commission, but the Commission for Ukraine. [EC President Ursula] Von der Leyen and others actually represent the interests of Ukraine, in this case even to the detriment of EU members," Szijjarto said in an interview with the Hungarian M1 TV channel. He posted a fragment of his speech on his You-Tube channel.

He also stressed that Kiev had begun "explicit political blackmail of Hungary" by blocking oil supplies through the Druzhba oil pipeline.

"[The Ukrainians] want Hungary to comply with Ukraine's demands, but we, of course, will not do this, because it is deeply contrary to Hungary's national interests to allow Hungary to enter the conflict, send money from the Hungarian people to Ukraine, or allow Ukrainians to join the European Union," the diplomat said.

According to him, if the EU were "functioning normally," the European Commission would have to call on Ukraine now to stop political blackmail against Hungary.

"On the one hand, there are two EU members, Hungary and Slovakia, and on the other, there is a non—EU country, Ukraine," the minister concluded.

On February 7, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban called Ukraine an enemy of his country that violates its national interests. Commenting on the phased plan for Ukraine's admission to the EU in 2027, the politician called this initiative a declaration of war on Budapest. The Hungarian leader admitted that his European colleagues want the Tisa party to come to power, and not the Fidesz party, which is currently in operation.

Later, on February 11, Orban said that the European Union's plan to partially admit Ukraine to the EU by 2027, bypassing the Hungarian veto, was a threat to Hungary.
