The doctor warned about the hidden risks of hormonal deficiency
Age-related hormonal changes are often attributed to fatigue and stress, but many of the symptoms have a clear biochemical nature. Vera Serezhina, an expert doctor at the LabQuest medical company, told Izvestia about how hormonal imbalance affects the quality of life of men and women.
"Hormonal changes affect both men and women. In men, this process is called andropause, in women it begins long before menopause — during perimenopause, when menstruation still persists, and the reproductive function is formally considered active. That is why this stage often goes unnoticed," the specialist explained.
Seryozhina noted that the same hormones are evaluated in men and women — follicle-stimulating and luteinizing hormones, prolactin, testosterone, progesterone and estradiol. It is important not only the absolute level of indicators, but also their ratio. In men, testosterone decline begins on average after the age of 30 and is about 1% per year in the absence of excess weight and chronic diseases. With an increase in body weight, the process accelerates, which is accompanied by a decrease in physical activity, abdominal obesity, a deterioration in the metabolic profile and a decrease in libido.
Hormonal changes are more difficult for women. Even with a regular cycle, there may be a deficiency of progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone. At the same time, the estrogen level may remain sufficient to maintain menstruation, creating the illusion of well-being. Symptoms include weight gain, swelling, emotional instability, sleep disorders, and episodes of depression. According to the observations of doctors, hormonal changes increasingly begin as early as 30-35 years old, which is associated with the effects of stress, environmental factors and drug stress.
The expert emphasized that the nervous system and autonomic regulation are the first to react: hot flashes, palpitations, anxiety, panic reactions, fluctuations in blood pressure and blood sugar levels appear. The Green scale, laboratory and instrumental studies are used to assess the condition. Before prescribing therapy, it is necessary to determine the hormonal profile, conduct an examination of the mammary glands and pelvic organs, evaluate blood clotting and biochemical parameters.
According to Serezhina, sex hormones perform a protective function for the cardiovascular system, bone tissue and metabolism. Their deficiency increases the risk of concomitant diseases, so age-related hormonal changes require timely diagnosis and correction, which allows you to maintain activity and quality of life.
On January 28, Gunai Salayeva, a reproductive specialist, obstetrician-gynecologist, and gynecologist-endocrinologist, called habits dangerous for women's health. Smoking accelerates the depletion of the ovarian reserve, leads to early menopause, damages eggs and reduces the likelihood of conception. In addition, women who smoke have increased risks of ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, placental abruption, premature birth, and low birth weight.
