- The leaders among unfriendly countries in the number of citizens in Russian universities are named
Latvia, Estonia and Ukraine are the leaders among unfriendly countries in terms of the number of their citizens studying at Russian universities. This was reported on February 19 by the newspaper Vedomosti, citing data from the Ministry of Education.
It is noted that in the 2025/26 academic year, 615 students from Latvia and 380 from Estonia study at Russian universities. The indicators of both countries increased slightly compared to the previous year. Lithuania, on the contrary, showed a decline — from 163 to 153 students.
Ukraine remains the absolute leader in the number of students in Russia, although their number has decreased by a third: from 3646 to 2295 people.
According to statistics, an increase in the number of students was also recorded from Romania, Cyprus, New Zealand and Norway. Other unfriendly countries are experiencing stagnation or decline. In total, 4,983 people from unfriendly countries study in Russia — just over 1% of the total number of international students.
