In the future, scandium, which is used in metallurgy for the production of aluminum-scandium alloys, will become a key rare earth metal. Anastasia Priklyova, Associate Professor of the Department of International Business at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, said this on Wednesday, February 18.

She noted in an interview with Lenta.Ru These alloys have a wide potential for industrial applications, primarily in the space industry and aircraft industry. Demand for metals such as neodymium, dysprosium, praseodymium, as well as yttrium and samarium will also grow, RT reports.

In turn, Pavel Pavlov, a leading researcher at the Foreign Trade Research Laboratory of the Presidential Academy, agreed with the thesis about the relevance of scandium. He recalled that this metal is necessary for the production of heavy-duty alloys. He also noted the special importance of neodymium and praseodymium.

"A lot of such metals are required in the construction of new-generation railways, which will be able to move levitating trains on a magnetic cushion (maglev technology). The Maglev, operating in commercial operation in Shanghai, reaches a speed of 431 km/h," he recalled, adding that at the end of last year, a new experimental Maglev prototype reached a flight speed of 800 km/h for the first time during tests in China.

Lanthanum is also required for the production of modern batteries for electric vehicles, Pavlov added.

Earlier in the day, the British magazine The Economist wrote that the United States is negotiating with the Russian side to create an atomic energy data center and build a tunnel under the Bering Strait. 360.ru .

According to media reports, the American business is interested in acquiring shares in the energy assets of the Russian Federation, as well as in the joint development of deposits of rare earth metals, oil and gas in the Arctic region, IA Regnum reports.
