Scientists have shown the passage of the Moon through the solar disk
Scientists have shown the Moon passing through the solar disk during a recent eclipse. This was announced on February 18 in the Telegram channel of the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the IKI RAS.
Scientists have managed to visualize in detail the surface of the Moon at the moment when it was facing the Earth with its unlit side.
The video is based on images of the CCOR-1 coronograph installed on the GOES-R satellite. The device was able to "view" the lunar seas and oceans on the dark side of the satellite.
This was made possible by the exceptional sensitivity of the equipment, which detected weak solar radiation reflected from the Earth's surface towards the Moon.
To create a complete picture, the experts superimposed on the coronagraph data an image of the Sun itself, obtained by the HMI device from the SDO satellite. Direct imaging of the sun with a coronagraph is impossible due to its ultra-high sensitivity, it will instantly "go blind", so the bright solar disk in it is always covered with a special opaque plate.
"You can see that the moment of the cosmic eclipse does not coincide with the Earth's moment for several hours. This is due to the delay it took for the moon's shadow to travel 36,000 kilometers from Earth to the satellite's location," noted the experts of the IKI RAS.
A day earlier, the Moscow planetarium told who would be able to see the ring of fire around the Moon, blocking the Sun. It will be seen in Antarctica and the Atlantic Ocean, and individual phases will be observed in South America, Africa and the ocean.
