The vote on judicial reform in Italy may negatively affect the "invincibility" of Prime Minister Giorgi Meloni. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on February 18.

Meloni currently heads the most stable government in Italy in recent years, but the referendum on judicial reform on March 22-23 may both strengthen her position and confirm her image as a politically invulnerable politician, and have the opposite effect, the author of the article notes.

The publication emphasizes that referendums in Italy can easily turn into a vote of confidence in the government, and Meloni is well aware that former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi was forced to resign after the failure of the referendum on constitutional reform in 2016.

Meloni's supporters believe that the reform will modernize the "slow, politicized and irresponsible" judicial system and bring it to a generally accepted European norm. However, in practice, the changes are purely technical in nature and relate only to the management, recruitment and disciplinary measures against judges and prosecutors.

On February 14, Meloni announced Italy's participation in the Peace Council as an observer. The Italian prime minister added that there would probably be a positive response to the invitation from the American side.
