AvtoVAZ introduced laser body welding for the first time
AvtoVAZ has implemented laser welding technology in preparation for the serial production of the new Lada Azimut crossover. It should bring the quality of bodywork to a new level while maintaining durability, the company's press service told Izvestia on February 18.
Unlike all other models in the history of AvtoVAZ, Lada Azimut will have a panoramic roof with a sunroof. Laser welding is used to connect the components of the panoramic roof at points that are critical to maintaining a given body geometry.
"The total length of the laser seams is 18 cm, which further eliminates leaks and guarantees reliable operation of the mechanisms. In addition, the new technology makes it possible to achieve high body strength and torsional rigidity," the company said.

AvtoVAZ stressed that the laser welding equipment was developed and manufactured by a domestic supplier, and the staff has already been trained to work with a laser, and the workshop is ready to maintain the required production rate. The installation process of the panoramic roof on Azimut is already integrated into the current line: universal equipment is installed at the roof installation site, which works with the body of the crossover and other models.
It is also stated that by the time of the official launch of the Azimut serial production, the automation level of the welding shop will reach almost 50%. To ensure the release of new items, the line has been replenished with 18 new robots, and their total number has already exceeded 150 units.
Earlier, on February 9, it became known that 217 Lada Azimut bodies had already been welded in test mode at the AvtoVAZ plant in Tolyatti. The start of mass production of the brand's first crossover is scheduled for the third quarter of 2026, and sales are scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter.
