In Europe, the rhetoric towards Russia is changing for two reasons. This opinion was expressed by political scientist Dmitry Zhuravlev on Tuesday, February 17.

Nikolai Petro, a professor of political science at the University of Rhode Island, said on February 16 that consolidation of political forces in European countries is intensifying, advocating a revision of the current course towards Russia and normalization of dialogue with Moscow, IA Regnum reports.

According to Zhuravlev, we are talking about politicians who think ahead. These forces have always existed, but now they have been allowed to manifest, and this is happening for two reasons, the expert believes.

Firstly, the population of European countries is tired of the conflict in Ukraine.

"This generates great support for those politicians, right and left, who advocated not interfering in Ukrainian affairs. There is a demand for them. Everyone wants to have massive support from voters, elections are inevitable in any country," the political scientist said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

The second reason is the change in the internal situation in the political elites, he believes.

"Those who are in favor of the conflict, they, in fact, offer nothing. They are for conflict in the sense that Russia is bad, it must be defeated. What to do in this case is unclear. Just supply weapons to Ukraine? They have been delivering for a long time, and the result is minimal, if at all. Therefore, the mood is beginning to mature in the political elite itself that it's time to end," Zhuravlev concluded.

On February 10, French leader Emmanuel Macron invited several European countries to resume dialogue with Russia, RT reports. According to him, Paris has restored the channel of communication with Moscow on a technical level. Macron expressed hope that in the future the EU will develop an "organized approach" for contacts with the Russian Federation.

In turn, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed the existence of contacts between Russia and France at the technical level. 360.ru . He also said that Moscow has always advocated maintaining dialogue and warned about the dangers of bringing relations to a "zero state." Later, Peskov noted that Macron was not trying to establish contact with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
