Prolonged use of gadgets and a sedentary lifestyle can lead to lymphostasis, facial swelling and disruptions in the urinary system. Lyudmila Kokotkina, a neurologist, narcologist, Candidate of medical Sciences, told Izvestia about this on February 17.

According to the neurologist, prolonged use of gadgets and a sedentary lifestyle provoke the occurrence of lymphostasis, a violation of lymph outflow. This causes puffiness of the face and malfunction of the urinary system. Radiation from the screens also negatively affects the conjunctiva, the sclera of the eyes and the skin, causing redness and rashes. Improper sleep and rest conditions, especially when playing in the dark, can lead to circadian rhythm disturbances.

"The development of the brain during adolescence requires sufficient oxygen and nutrients. Lack of physical activity and fresh air can lead to hypoxia and neuron dysfunction. This, in turn, affects mental development: despite physical maturation, a teenager may experience difficulties in forming cognitive functions and mental stability," she said.

As the expert emphasized, in order to minimize the negative effects of using gadgets, parents should limit the time spent playing games to 40 minutes. In addition, she stressed the importance of regular physical activity during recess and as part of the learning process.

"Conditions in educational institutions should include ventilated rooms, and the use of gadgets should be limited in the classroom. Increasing the number of physical education classes will help improve the flow of oxygen to the brain," concluded Kokotkina.

On February 12, Medical Xpress magazine reported that among adolescents aged 11-12, addiction to mobile phones, social media, and video games is associated with an increased risk of mental health problems and sleep disorders. The results showed that dependence on gadgets and social media was associated with higher rates of depression, somatic disorders, attention and behavior disorders, and sleep disorders.
