Iran intends to block the Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf with the Indian Ocean, which is important for oil supplies to world markets. This was announced on February 17 by Alireza Tangsiri, Commander of the naval forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

"If there is a pretext for closing the Strait of Hormuz, our armed forces will carry out this operation as soon as possible," Tangsiri said, quoted by the Iranian state television and radio company IRIB.

Earlier in June 2025, Iran was already exploring the possibility of closing the Strait of Hormuz. Then the Iranian MP Ismail Kousari spoke about it.

Earlier in the day, negotiations between Iran and the United States began at the Omani diplomatic mission in Geneva. The agenda of the talks focused exclusively on the nuclear issue and the lifting of illegal US sanctions against our country. The Iranian delegation is headed by Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi. He said he had come to Geneva with "real initiatives" to reach a fair and balanced agreement.
