The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has launched an official investigation into the Grok chatbot for its ability to create videos and images of an intimate nature and the processing of personal data. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on February 17.

The publication clarifies that the Irish Supervisory Authority is the leading regulator of the European Union (EU) for the social network X (ex. Twitter), since the activities of Elon Musk's company in Europe are based in Ireland.

"As the EU's leading supervisory authority for X, the Data Protection Commission has launched a large-scale investigation into XIUC (X Internet Unlimited Company, the company that owns Grok AI. — ed.)," said the deputy head of the Commission, Graham Doyle.

He also added that negotiations are already underway with the company regarding the alleged ability of X users to use Grok AI "to generate images of a sexual nature involving real people, including children." Doyle clarified that the investigation will examine the company's compliance with some of its "fundamental obligations under the EU General Data Protection Regulation."

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on January 14 that the social network X is working with the Grok chatbot to ensure its compliance with British law. He noted that the British government will strengthen laws and prepare new ones, and Ofcom will continue its independent investigation into broadcasting, Internet, telecommunications and postal communications.

On January 10, American billionaire and entrepreneur Elon Musk shared a repost showing an artificial intelligence-generated photo of Starmer in a bikini. He added that the British authorities seek to restrict freedom of speech.
