The Greek economy has faced significant damage from anti-Russian sanctions, with tourism, the fur industry and industry particularly affected. The Russian Embassy in Athens told Izvestia about this on February 17.

"In digital terms, it is difficult to say what the extent of the damage to the Greek economy is due to following the sanctions policy of Brussels, but it is certainly considerable. In fact, Russian tourism to Greece has been stopped, and previously about 1 million tourists from our country came here on vacation every year. The fur industry in Greece, which was mainly focused on buyers from Russia, has been destroyed. Fuel prices are rising, and this entails losses for the Greek industry," the diplomatic mission said.

The Russian Embassy noted that as a response to the anti-Russian sanctions of the European Union (EU), the access of Greek agricultural products to the Russian market has been closed since 2015. Athens has suffered very significant damage. However, it is not customary to talk about this here, and the Greek media diligently avoid this topic, diplomats point out.

"Since 2014, Greece has been disciplinedly supporting all illegitimate EU sanctions against our country. Welcomes the introduction of a ban on Russian gas supplies to the European market from 2027. We do not have any evidence of Athens' opposition to the adoption of anti—Russian sanctions," the Russian Embassy said.

They also confirmed that there have been no changes in the position of the Greek leadership regarding the resumption of direct dialogue with Russia. Greece fully follows the EU's anti-Russian policy, and according to diplomats, there is no talk of restoring cooperation yet.

The chairman of the Greek Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis, said last November that Greece had lost Russian tourists due to Ukraine's support. This led to losses in the country's economy. He estimated the loss to the Greek tourism industry from the Russians at 1.5 million people. The parliamentarian noted that in this regard, exports to Russia were frozen.
