The European left-wing parties are now in crisis: They are split internally, often compromise with the system, and cannot offer a strong alternative to capitalism. Alexey Chikhachev, Associate Professor of the Department of European Studies at the Faculty of International Relations of St. Petersburg State University and a leading expert at the Center for Strategic Studies at the Higher School of Economics, told about this on February 16.

"Neither ideological rigor nor attempts to preserve the purity of views bring the support of voters. The left is learning to act in terms of compromise and political realities," the expert noted.

According to him, the situation has developed not because of the pressure of external forces, but because of the pragmatic choice of the politicians themselves.

Despite this, in his opinion, there is a demand for new leftist ideas in society, and the chances of updating the movement still remain. Chikhachev stressed that with at least partial unity and active work with voters, the left can regain influence in European politics.

The head of the Federation Council Commission on information policy, Alexei Pushkov, said on January 5 that the failures in the economies of Austria, France, Great Britain and Germany caused the unsuccessful policies of the liberal parties in Europe, and also led to an increase in the popularity of right-wing movements. This was announced on January 5.

The senator noted that the liberals' complaints about the rise of right-wing populism are an indirect recognition of failures in conducting politics.
