A high-alert regime has been introduced in Makhachkala after a fire at a gas storage station. This was announced on February 16 by the head of the city Dzhambulat Salavov.

"Due to the emergency situation on the territory of the gas storage station in the village of Novy Khushet, I decided to introduce a high—alert regime in Makhachkala. <...> Evacuation of the population from the affected area was successfully carried out," Salavov wrote on his Telegram channel.

According to him, the fire has been successfully extinguished, emergency services continue to work in an enhanced mode, and an operational headquarters has been deployed at school No. 6.

"On behalf of (the head of Dagestan. Sergei Alimovich Melikov has created an operational headquarters under my leadership, which will deal with eliminating the consequences of the incident and ensuring the safety of citizens," he added.

The press service of the Main Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation reported earlier that day that nine people were injured in a fire at a hostel in the north of Moscow. Eight victims were taken to medical facilities. A criminal case has been opened into the fire.
