- Residents of Antarctica, South America and Africa will see the fiery ring of the Sun.
The annular solar eclipse on February 17 will be visible in the circumpolar and mid-latitudes of the Earth's Southern hemisphere, but it will not be possible to observe it from Russia. This was reported in the press service of the Moscow Planetarium.
The maximum phase of the eclipse (0.963) will begin at 15:13 Moscow time and last 2 minutes and 19 seconds.
"The area of its best visibility falls into the circumpolar and middle latitudes of the Southern hemisphere of the planet. The eclipse will not be visible from Russia," the organization noted.
The ring of fire around the Moon, which covers the Sun, will be seen in Antarctica and the Atlantic Ocean, and individual phases will be observed in South America, Africa and the ocean.
"Solar eclipses occur only on new moons, when the Moon is on the ecliptic between the Earth and the Sun. Two to five solar eclipses may occur during the year," the planetarium clarified for TASS.
Vitaly Frantsev, a lecturer at the Perm Planetarium, reported on February 7 that an annular solar eclipse could be observed from Antarctica, Chile, Argentina and South Africa on February 17. It was noted that the effect of the "ring of fire" will be visible only in Antarctica.
