Scientists have discovered a dragon-shaped coronal hole in the Sun
An unusually shaped coronal hole resembling a dragon has been recorded on the Sun. This was announced on January 16 at the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Institute of Space Research (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
According to experts from the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the IKI RAS, the images clearly show a structure that, if one imagines it, resembles a mythical creature.
"A beautiful coronal hole in the Sun. Dragon. We just decided to keep it here as a keepsake. With a certain amount of imagination, you can even see the flame being exhaled," says a message posted on the laboratory's Telegram channel.
Coronal holes are regions in the solar corona with reduced plasma density and temperature. Through them, streams of fast solar wind enter outer space, which can affect the geomagnetic situation on Earth.
On the same day, a large coronal hole of a rare configuration similar to unity formed on the Sun. Scientists noted that the active appearance of coronal holes is associated with a decline in solar activity after passing the peak, which occurred in October – December 2024.
