Canada's confiscation of Russian diplomatic property would mean a break in bilateral relations. This was announced on February 16 by Russian Ambassador to Ottawa Oleg Stepanov.

"There are some radical public figures here (in Canada. — Ed.) <...> they are calling for exactly this (the confiscation of assets. — Ed.)," he told RIA Novosti.

Stepnov also noted that Moscow is ready for any scenario development. However, the ambassador expressed the hope that the situation would not lead to a "breakdown of relations into the abyss," adds "Газета.Ru ".

Alexander Gusarov, director of the North Atlantic Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, told Izvestia last December that the bill S-278 "On Amending the Law on Special Economic Measures" being considered in Canada is nothing more than a way to legalize at the state level a possible attempt to steal Russian assets. He also noted that the European Union (EU) had not been able to agree on a so-called reparation loan secured by Russian frozen assets due to high reputational and legal risks.

All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MAX messenger.
