- In Britain, the EU expressed dissatisfaction with Rutte's policy towards the United States.
Some of the leaders of the European Union (EU) expressed dissatisfaction with the way NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is building a dialogue with Washington against the background of the complication of transatlantic relations. This was reported on February 16 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper.
According to the newspaper, the disagreements escalated against the background of statements by US President Donald Trump, who questioned Washington's willingness to fulfill its obligations to protect Europe. Additional tension was caused by his statements about a possible invasion of Greenland, which intensified discussions in the EU about the need to accelerate the reduction of security dependence on the United States.
In early February, Rutte said that Europe was unable to ensure its own security without the support of the United States, calling those who held a different view "dreamers." These words provoked criticism from a number of European politicians.
It is clarified that at the meeting of European leaders with Rutte in Munich, several participants urged him to pay less attention to attempts to "appease" Trump and rely more on Europe's strategic autonomy.
On February 13, Rutte announced the strengthening of Europe's role in NATO while maintaining the US presence. According to him, Washington is "more firmly rooted in NATO than ever," as the allies finally assume a greater share of responsibility for collective defense.
